The himalayan flash flood that devastated northern Nepal on August 26 was an unprecedented disaster. The death toll continues to rise, with nearly 1,400 people now confirmed dead and 5,130 still missing, including around 600 foreign nationals from 35 countries.
Authorities now face the daunting task of recovering and identifying hundreds of bodies, many of them severely damaged by the floodwaters. Meanwhile, families of those still missing remain in agonising uncertainty as rescue operations continue.
