Cleaning expert warns of kitchen mistake that could ruin your Christmas dinner

While Christmas is a time for joy and festive cheer, many people may find themselves feeling stressed and bothered about the holiday preparations - from gift shopping to cooking dinner.

But one thing that may prove a chore is having to clean your house from top to bottom ahead of having guests over, to make a good impression.

If you're not up to date on housework then the prospect of a big clean can feel daunting, but according to an expert, there are certain areas of the house you should focus on.

Olivia Yong, a Cleaning Chemist at Astonish, has shared her top tips for preparing the home for Christmas and warned people not to make a big mistake that could potentially ruin your Christmas dinner.

Speaking to The Mirror, she said: "To make your Christmas day cleaning more manageable, don’t try to clean everything. Concentrate on rooms that will be used over the Christmas period such as your living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, and any guest bedrooms.

"If guests are staying over the Christmas period, it’s important to remember that they’re not there to inspect your house so try not to worry about cleaning it spotless!"

The expert went on to say that the key area to clean, and where some people may forget, is the oven.

"Clean your oven so you can cook the dinner to perfection," added Olivia. "A dirty oven can actually affect the taste of your food as well as creating a rather nasty smell in the house."

Any oven and grill cleaner should help to remove tough dirt and grime from in there.

Olivia said: "You should also focus on giving the bathroom a good clean before any of your guests arrive, by removing mould and limescale to help leave your bathroom smelling fresh. I would recommend using the Bathroom Cleaner (£1.29) from Astonish to make this a quick job!

"It’s also a good opportunity to buy a nice toilet block that’s long-lasting so you don’t have to keep on top of cleaning it over the Christmas period."

And her final tip was to do "a general clean" not a deep clean in rooms where guests will be gathered over the Christmas period such as the living room and dining room.

She adds: "It’s important to not only vacuum these areas but also to dust and polish to leave the room looking sparkling clean."
