Motorists faced long M6 delays in Wigan this Boxing Day after a huge 12-car crash.
Two lanes of a section of the northbound carriageway were shut for about two hours today (December 26) from 2.20pm. Lanes were closed between junction 26, for the M58, and junction 27 for Standish.
There was a separate incident on the other side of the motorway in the same area, which saw three cars lose control. Like the other incident, two lanes of the M6 were closed.

No information has been released on any injuries sustained in the crashes. However, North West Motorway Police indicated it was a ‘damage only’ incident.
Cops tweeted: “Appears a hail shower is moving across the region. We now have two lanes closed on the M6 northbound [from] J26 - J27 for a 12 car damage only road traffic collision. There are also three vehicles that have lost control on the SB on the same section closing lanes 3 & 2. Expect delays.”
About 90 minutes later, the force added: “The M6 northbound between J26 & J27 now has 2 lanes of 3 running. There are still delays and we will get lane 1 re-open as soon as the remaining 6 vehicles have been recovered.”
The motorway was fully re-opened just after 5pm, Highways North West said. At their peak, delays were around the 40-minute mark.
