Christmas Jumper Day explained as people dressing up can double donations for free

Thursday, December 8 marks Christmas Jumper Day - a day where all fashion rules go out the window and tacky clothing is encouraged.

Every second Thursday of December is set aside for people to put on their most festive gear all in the name of a good cause, though the fundraising day doesn't have to be on the 8th.

This year promises to be the "best yet" edition of the event - because the UK Government has promised to match the same amount as you give. That means every time you give £2 to Save The Children, they'll also donate £2.

Schools, offices and other workplaces are encouraged to take part in the celebrations.

Since it was first launched back in 2012, the event has raised over £27 million for vulnerable children all over the world thanks to an end-of-year push to make donations and have fun whilst doing it.

With double the funds rolling in, Save The Children has "big plans" to help mothers and babies in Kenya get the care and resources they need.

For the Scots who have maybe missed the day from their calendar, then December 8 is not the only day you can take part. The charity has said that Scots can pick an alternative day that suits them in this scenario.

Humans are not the only ones being encouraged to get involved - in fact, hundreds of dogs join in on the fun every year as well.

Save The Children has also said, where possible, that participants shouldn't buy a new festive jumper and instead re-wear an old one, or purchase one second-hand, in a bid to be more mindful about the environment.

Anyone taking part in the fun can get a fundraising pack when they sign up on the charity's website, which includes valuable information on how you can make a donation via making your own JustGiving page.

Then all you need to do is put on your Christmas jumper and enjoy your day, getting donations as you go. Once you're all done, you can donate yours or your team's fundraising on JustGiving any time or via the Save the Children website.

You can also set up a text code when you register that'll allow you to make a donation quicker via message.
