What’s new: One Chinese national was killed and another injured in a central Bangkok mall shooting Tuesday, the Chinese Embassy in Thailand has confirmed.
The embassy said in a statement that the victims’ identities have been confirmed, and the injured person was in stable condition at a hospital. Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has visited the injured victim, according to the statement.
Thavisin and Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara, the deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs, each phoned Chinese Ambassador Han Zhiqiang to express their condolences about the dead victim and wished the injured person a speedy recovery, the statement added.
What’s more: Tuesday’s shooting at the luxury Siam Paragon mall in downtown Bangkok left two women dead, from China and Myanmar, and five others injured, local police said.
The shooting lasted about 90 minutes in the afternoon until the suspect, a 14-year-old, surrendered and was arrested at the scene.
Thai national police chief Torsak Sukvimol said the suspect had been receiving psychiatric treatment, but had skipped his prescribed medicine on the day of the shooting, Reuters reported.
