China has widened its power to stop citizens from leaving the country, giving authorities a clearer legal route to restrict departures linked to national security, export controls and sensitive technology.
The new China exit controls took effect on Tuesday, 15 September, formalising restrictions that had previously operated through a patchwork of rules and practices. The move comes as Beijing and Washington compete fiercely over artificial intelligence and other strategic technologies.
