Artificial intelligence can perform impressively when it is tested on carefully prepared medical images and records. Putting it inside a busy hospital is another matter.
Researchers in China recently did just that, embedding an AI-powered eye clinic into routine care at Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital. Instead of asking whether one AI model could recognise an eye disease, they built a system designed to follow patients through several stages of care.
