China has expressed its stance on the recent conflict between Iran and Israel, labeling Iran's attack on Israel as an exercise of the right of self-defense. During a phone call between the foreign ministers of China and Iran, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi condemned the attack on a consulate building in the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus, stating that it violated international law and was unacceptable.
China acknowledged Iran's claim that the actions were limited and in self-defense in response to the attack on the embassy building. The Chinese foreign minister emphasized the sensitivity of the current regional situation and Iran's commitment to exercising restraint without further escalating tensions.
Furthermore, China's Special Envoy on the Middle East, Zhai Jun, held a meeting with Israel's Ambassador to China, where Israel expressed its concerns regarding the conflict in Gaza. Zhai Jun reiterated China's deep concern over the escalating regional tensions, emphasizing that conflicts and bloodshed benefit no one.
The statement from the Chinese foreign ministry highlighted the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire and cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip. It also called for ensuring humanitarian aid, prompt release of detained personnel, and pursuing a political settlement for the peaceful coexistence of Israel and Palestine based on the two-state solution.
