What’s new: Three current and former senior officials at the state-run China Ethnic News, a twice-weekly periodical that reports on news elated to minority groups, are under investigation for corruption, according to the nation’s top graft buster.
Vice president Li Xiaodong, economic department director Li Bing and former president Zhang Huazhi are suspected of “serious violations of discipline and law,” according to two statement s published Friday by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. It did not give any more details of the alleged violations.
Zhang was named in his current capacity of vice president of Southwest Minzu University and head of the party committee’s publicity department at the institution.
The background: Official probes carried out by the cabinet-level National Ethnic Affairs Commission (NEAC) in 2022 found shortcomings within the leadership teams at China Ethnic News and Southwest Minzu University and highlighted a non-standardized personnel selection process, as well as a lack of party-construction efforts at the grassroots level at the two organizations.
Zhang was officially named the head of China Ethnic News in 2014. He was later transferred to Southwest Minzu University, an institution for the education of ethnic minorities, in 2020. Both institutions are under the direct administration of NEAC.
