Cosmetics and personal care products sent an estimated 42,457 people to U.S. emergency departments with eye injuries from 2005 to 2024, and children 4 and younger made up nearly a quarter of them. The findings were presented at the American Academy of Ophthalmology's 130th annual meeting, according to an academy news release.
That works out to about 2,100 emergency visits a year, or nearly six a day. Most injuries happened at home, and burns from heat or chemicals were the most common types.
