A child has died and six more have been taken to hospital with injuries after a vehicle rolled over near an intersection.

Emergency services were called to the site of the single vehicle crash at Parwan, west of Melbourne, shortly before 4pm on Tuesday.

A second child was airlifted to hospital with critical injuries and five other children were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A woman was also taken to hospital for observation.

Specialist ambulance resources remained at the scene of the crash, near the Nerowie and Parwan-Exford roads intersection, into the evening.

Among them were two helicopter crews, two mobile intensive care ambulance paramedic crews and five advanced life support paramedic crews.

"Their priority is with their patients," an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said in a statement.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.
