Chiefs to host free agent DL Arden Key on a visit

The Kansas City Chiefs could finally be looking to address their pass rush issues.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Chiefs plan to host Arden Key on a visit on Friday. A former third-round draft pick out of LSU by the Las Vegas Raiders in 2018, Key spent the 2021 NFL season with the San Francisco 49ers and posted a career year. The 6-5 and 240-pound defensive lineman posted 22 combined tackles, 6.5 sacks and 36 total pressures.

Key is still just 25 years old, so he fits the youth movement currently going on in Kansas City on both sides of the ball.

Key kicked off his career as an edge rusher, but he found the majority of his NFL success with the 49ers rushing from the defensive interior. Pairing him with Chris Jones on passing downs is an exciting prospect, but this move wouldn’t exactly do much when it comes to their needs at the defensive end position. Perhaps he could operate there as a base end on rushing downs.

Key has already taken visits with the Detriot Lions and the Baltimore Ravens. The fact that he hasn’t yet signed with a team tells me that he hasn’t quite received the offer that he’s looking for. Before the Marquez Valdes-Scantling signing, the Chiefs were projected to have nearly $30 million in cap space.
