Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver Deion Burks transferred from Purdue to Oklahoma to showcase his talents as a potential top 60 selection in the 2025 NFL draft. He possesses all of the traits that are necessary to step in as a rookie contributor for the Kansas City Chiefs next season.
Burks punishes defenses for giving him free releases off the line of scrimmage. He uses his burst to overtake and stack cornerbacks in off-man coverage. Burks struggles to counter physical corners at the line of scrimmage but plays with the agility to dodge jams and stack press defenders.
Burks sells route fakes well to manipulate defenders. His agility and quick footwork help him execute sharp cuts to generate natural separation. Burks’ loose frame and natural movement skills shine as he flies around the field.
Burks performs surprisingly well at the catch point for a 5 foot 9 inch, 194 pound receiver. He tracks the ball over his shoulder well and makes fully extended diving receptions. Offenses shouldn’t throw jump balls his way. He doesn’t have the size to elevate over cornerbacks and dominate at the catch point.
Kansas City bet on several small receivers in recent years, including Xavier Worthy. Adding Burks’ frame to the room doesn’t diversify the team’s size. However, the NFL’s shift toward dominant defenses makes receivers who separate quickly premium assets.
The Sooners travel to Jordan-Hare Stadium to face Auburn on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 3:30 p.m. The Tigers are the second of eight SEC teams on Oklahoma’s schedule.
