Chiefs RB Deneric Prince elevated from practice squad after Jerick McKinnon is ruled out vs. Packers

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a late update to their roster ahead of Sunday night’s game against the Green Bay Packers. After trending towards playing this Sunday following yesterday’s practice, running back Jerick McKinnon has been officially ruled out ahead of the team’s travel to Green Bay.

The team reported the update on Saturday as McKinnon continues to deal with a groin injury that held him out of last week’s victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. The veteran running back has typically served as the third down running back on offense this season. He affects the passing game as an essential red zone weapon for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, becoming one of the premier pass-catching running backs in the league during last season’s Super Bowl run.

The Chiefs are elevating undrafted rookie running back Deneric Prince to the active roster from the practice squad to serve as McKinnon’s replacement tomorrow night. The move will likely be for depth as Clyde Edwards Helaire is expected to resume the role as third down running back in McKinnon’s absence.

During the preseason, Prince tallied 89 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries while displaying an ability to return kicks and make tackles on special teams, showing plenty of versatility.
