Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes reinforces confidence in WR Kadarius Toney

It was a rough outing for Kansas City Chiefs receiver Kadarius Toney, who had two crucial drops in the team’s Week 1 loss to the Detroit Lions.

But Toney, who joined Kansas City last season via trade and earned the longest punt return in Super Bowl history this past February, still has the full confidence of superstar Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“I have trust in KT,” Mahomes said after the game. “He missed a lot of training camp. Obviously, he wanted to play and fought in rehab hard so he could play. Stuff is not always going to go your way.

“Obviously he would have wanted to catch a few of those in the game but I have trust that he is going to be the guy that I go to in those crucial moments and he’s going to make the catch and win us some games like he did last year … I’m sure that those drops will disappear.”

Going back to the well with a player after they make a crucial mistake has sort of been the Chiefs’ M.O. over the years under coach Andy Reid. One could go all the way back to 2017 when former Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt coughed up the ball on his first NFL carry. Instead of punishing Hunt, the Chiefs went straight back to him on the next drive, and he ended up with 246 yards and three touchdowns.

Coincidentally, that game could also reflect what the Chiefs’ loss to the Lions was – a Week 1 misstep. The New England Patriots lost that game to the Chiefs 42-27 but went on to make the Super Bowl anyway. Could the same happen with the Chiefs this year?

It’s possible, but for now, the Chiefs and Mahomes will make sure to look Toney’s way again in Week 2, and hope that Week 1 was just an outlier.

“I think they know that I’m going to keep firing it,” Mahomes said, “and so we’ll try to get it fixed this next week and correct it going into next game.”
