Chesterfield ‘aware’ of allegations one of their players was involved in ‘vicious assault’ on Oldham Athletic player

Chesterfield say they are ‘aware’ of allegations that one of their players was involved in a ‘vicious assault’ on Oldham Athletic 's Hallam Hope.

The 28-year-old was left with ‘serious injuries’ after being attacked in the staff car park outside Boundary Park following Oldham's 2-0 defeat to The Spireites on Saturday.

The Latics said police had been informed about the attack, which left the winger requiring hospital treatment. The club said it had passed CCTV to officers in connection with the incident.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, police are investigating claims that a Chesterfield player was behind the attack.

In a statement issued this afternoon, Chesterfield said: "Following an incident which took place after Saturday’s game at Oldham Athletic, we are aware of an allegation relating to an un-named Chesterfield player.

"We are assisting Greater Manchester Police with their enquiries. As this is an ongoing investigation, no further comment will be made at this stage."

In an earlier statement, Oldham Athletic said: "Oldham Athletic is sorry to have to report that our player, Hallam Hope, was the victim of a vicious assault on Saturday evening. The assault took place in the staff car park following Saturday’s game against Chesterfield.

"Hallam sustained serious injuries which required hospital treatment and he will be out of action for some weeks. The matter has been reported to the Police and we have provided CCTV footage in relation to the incident.

"Whilst the investigation is continuing Oldham Athletic will make no further comment on the incident. The club is supporting Hallam and will continue to do so. We wish him a speedy recovery from a dreadful experience."

Hope joined Oldham in 2021 and has since made 53 appearances for the club. He played the full 90 minutes of Saturday's defeat against table-topping Chesterfield.

Oldham currently sit 14th in the National League after seven matches of the season. Hope's previous clubs include Everton, Northampton Town, Sheffield Wednesday, Bury, Carlisle United and Swindon Town.
