Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson suffers 'serious' ankle injury on Senegal duty

Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson has suffered a “serious” ankle injury on international duty with Senegal.

Jackson was forced off late on in Thursday’s 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw against DR Congo in Diamniadio.

The 22-year-old then missed Sunday’s 1-0 win against Mauritania and scans have now shown a “serious sprain of the ankle”.

Chelsea face an anxious wait to discover the full extent of the injury but it is potentially an early setback to new head coach Enzo Maresca.

Jackson scored 14 Premier League goals in a solid debut campaign at Stamford Bridge and a disrupted pre-season would be a blow.

Chelsea are due back for the start of pre-season at the beginning of July before they go the United States, with their first game in America against Wrexham on July 24.

A statement from the Senegalese FA read: “Nicolas Jackson injured his right ankle during the Senegal-DRC match on June 6, 2024.

“Radiology examinations (MRI) carried out on June 7 revealed a serious sprain of the ankle.”

Jackson’s ankle sprain is the latest injury to hit Chelsea. There were 43 separate injuries sustained by Blues players across the 2023-24 season, with Manchester United (45) the only Premier League club to suffer more.
