Chelsea sporting director search rumbles on with Tim Steidten talks planned after two targets rejected club

Chelsea are set for another round of talks with Bayer Leverkusen’s Tim Steidten over filling one of their sporting director and technical director roles.

Co-owner Todd Boehly is operating as interim sporting director but the American is keen to hand over transfer responsibilities before the World Cup.

Talks with both RB Salzburg’s Christoph Freund and Paris Saint-Germain’s Luis Campos collapsed last week, while there are doubts over whether former Liverpool director Michael Edwards is ready to move into a big job so soon after taking a break from football.

The new Boehly-Clearlake regime are overseeing a huge turnover of senior staff at Stamford Bridge and have informed Chelsea’s head physio Thierry Laurent that he is to leave his role.

Laurent has been at Chelsea for 17 years and his exit follows the departure of long-term club doctor Paco Biosca as the new owners bring in their own staff.

It follows the exits of long-term transfer chief Marina Granovskaia, her advisor Petr Cech, chairman Bruce Buck and head of international scouting Scott McLachlan.

Communications director Steve Atkins is also leaving to join McClaren.

The new Chelsea owners have also sacked manager Thomas Tuchel. Graham Potter has been installed as the German’s replacement for over a fortnight and has brought recruitment analyst Kyle Macauley with him from Brighton.

Macauley is a long-time transfer advisor to Potter and has already been seen meeting agents around the Chelsea training ground at Cobham.
