Chelsea's managerial search serves as a reminder of Newcastle United's ambitious safety net

Graham Potter’s imminent departure from Brighton serves as a reminder of the safety net that Newcastle United now have when it comes to their very own head coach. It was perhaps somewhat inevitable that a top six side would soon come calling for Potter given his superb record at Brighton but the very fact that the South Coast side are all but helpless to prevent his exit, goes to show yet another benefit of Newcastle’s ambitious ownership.

A young British manager who has turned a near consistently relegation-threatened side into an established Premier League side is the perfect description for Potter - a man who has gained plaudits for his style of play, and ability to handle players. It could also in many ways serve as a description for Eddie Howe - first at Bournemouth and now Newcastle.

If you ask football fans to list the top young British managers in the game, it’s a fair assumption that Potter and Howe would be near if not top of the list. Yet while one side is set to lose its head coach, another sits comfortably in the knowledge that it would take quite something to tempt their manager away.
