Ian Maatsen is set to join Borussia Dortmund on loan from Chelsea until the end of the season.

Maatsen almost left Chelsea last summer, when Burnley had a £31.5m offer accepted on deadline day to sign him after a successful season on loan there, but the Dutchman decided to stay at Stamford Bridge. He has started only one Premier League game under Mauricio Pochettino despite Chelsea’s injury problems.

Dortmund are paying a £2m loan fee and Maatsen has signed a new two-year extension at Chelsea, which takes his deal up until 2027. The left-back’s new contract contains a release clause and Chelsea hope Maatsen plays enough football at Dortmund for his value to increase ahead of a potential summer move.

Dortmund have made a left-back and a winger their prime January targets and are close to securing Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho on loan. Sancho left Dortmund for United in July 2021 for an initial £73m.
