Chelsea prepare £65m Man United transfer 'hijack' with new offer for David De Gea replacement

The summer transfer window often creates chances for clubs to cross paths in the pursuit of new signings to bolster their squads. For Chelsea last summer, it was Barcelona as the two sides negotiated deals between them for players, while also seemingly targeting similar stars too.

This time around, it could well be Manchester United that the Blues appear in a tussle with, having had similar areas to strengthen in. Midfield is one of those as United have made their bids for Chelsea star Mason Mount, who has just one-year remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Amid a failure to reach an agreement for a switch so far in the window, the Red Devils appear to have moved on to Moises Caicedo, who football.london understands is a priority target for the Blues. There's also the forward ranks both teams are looking at, in particular at centre-forward.

Then there's the hunt for a number one goalkeeper, with Chelsea ready to let Edouard Mendy leave the club to move to the Saudi Pro League. Kepa Arrizabalaga looks set to remain, but he hasn't always convinced between the posts and his dwindling contract adds further concerns.

There are similar issues at Old Trafford, with David De Gea yet to agree a new deal at the club, while there are questions over whether he is suitable to be the first-choice after some high-profile errors last campaign. It has resulted in, yet again, similar transfer targets being on the radar of the Premier League teams.

Inter Milan's Andre Onana is one of those, but another is Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, who has impressed at just 23 years old. United are claimed to be long-term admirers of the Portuguese international, but Chelsea could "hijack" any move that they wish to make.

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, the Blues are readying an offer to Porto for the shot-stopper in the next few days after sales have been completed. A move worth £65million is being prepared, with £21.5million of that being paid up front and the rest over instalments.

It remains to be seen whether that offer will be enough to complete a move or if Porto have other terms they would prefer for the goalkeeper. However, it could put another issue in the way of Manchester United, who will have to decide whether to match that move.
