Chelsea news: Marc Cucurella transfer slammed amid Reece James injury update

Graham Potter's reign as Chelsea boss started full of hope but the hammering at Brighton has now seen the Englishman come under fire.

One of the players who has come in for particular criticism following the defeat is Marc Cucurella, who joined the Blues for £60million in the summer. But the decision to sanction that deal has now been questioned after Chelsea's dreadful performance at the Amex Stadium.

The criticism of Cucurella comes as Inter Milan revealed the cut-price fee they able to negotiate to bring in Romelu Lukaku and an update on Reece James' injury was provided. Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest Chelsea news.

Cucurella deal slammed

The decision to pay £60m to sign Marc Cucurella has been questioned in the aftermath of Chelsea's dreadful defeat to Brighton.

Cucurella arrived at Stamford Bridge from the Seagulls and has so far been solid for the Blues. But former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has now questioned to decision to pay such a large fee to sign him.

"There’s only a few weeks before the World Cup so these players can play more often than Potter wants to play them. There’s been too much rotation and Cucurella looks like a bad £60m spent by Chelsea for me," he told talkSPORT.

Inter Milan have revealed they were able to negotiate a cut-price fee with Chelsea to secure the signing of Romelu Lukaku in the summer.

Lukaku only joined the Blues ahead of last season, but endured a dreadful year at Stamford Bridge. Having been left surplus to requirements by former boss Thomas Tuchel, the Belgian was forced to find an exit route.

Serie A giants Inter were willing to offer him a return to the San Siro, but only in a loan deal. That deal was finally agreed at the end of June, with Lukaku moving back to Italy for what has now been revealed to be a cut-price fee.

James injury update

Reece James still has hope that he can feature at the World Cup, despite being forced to wear a knee brace.

The England international suffered the knee injury in the Champions League win over AC Milan. He has since been ruled out of Chelsea's last five games, with major concerns that he will be fit enough to play in the tournament in Qatar.

James has been one of Gareth Southgate's most reliable players for the Three Lions and would have been guaranteed a place had he not suffered his injury. But it has now been claimed that the right-back still believes has a chance of making it to Qatar.
