Chelsea make £1m decision as Todd Boehly takes major step towards Julian Nagelsmann appointment

Chelsea look set to lose a key member of their backroom staff with Anthony Barry on the verge of a reunion with Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich. The highly rated coach had been asked to stay clear of first-team matters in west London while the two clubs negotiated his release, but those issues now look to have been resolved.

According to The Times, a deal has been agreed between Bayern and Chelsea which will see Barry leave England for Germany. Within moments of his first press conference as Bayern head coach, Tuchel confirmed his desire to bring Barry to Allianz Arena which left some at Chelsea disappointed by his public actions. Other likely reasons for the lengthy delay in negotiations over a move being green-lit involved each club's respective Champions League hopes, which are now over, and the difference in valuation between both club's regarding a compensation fee.

For sanctioning his exit, the Blues will receive a £1million compensation fee alongside possibly being handed a far easier route to appointing former Bayern boss Julian Naglesmann as their next manager.

Nagelsmann has emerged as the front-runner for the vacant Chelsea head coach role, football.london understands, but Todd Boehly will not rush the process of appointing a successor to lead the club forward. Both the young German coach and Luis Enrique have held talks with Chelsea representatives in London this month.

Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has also been contacted by those at Stamford Bridge after leaving Boehly and Behdad Eghbali impressed in an interview before the co-controlling owners appointed Graham Potter.

Elsewhere in the managerial shop window is Enrique. However, the former Spain boss is no longer among the leading candidates at Chelsea. Nagelsmann, however, certainly is and the path to the former RB Leipzig coach for Chelsea may have just become significantly easier.

Following his surprise sacking from the German champions, Nagelsmann was effectively placed on gardening leave. For Chelsea to bring Nagelsmann in, negotiations for his release would have had to have been conducted.

However, with the Barry issue sorted and subsequently removed from the equation there would be fewer complications to any discussions. Last Thursday was Nagelsmann's first opportunity for face to face talks with Chelsea and after impressing in that interview, the Telegraph have reported that the club are expected to hold further talks with Nagelsmann.
