Chelsea handed key new injury boost as crunch Manchester United showdown looms

Defender Trevoh Chalobah is back in training following injury in a major boost to Chelsea.

The Blues have beaten Port Vale 7-0 in the FA Cup but also fallen to 3-0 defeats against both Everton and Manchester City since Chalobah suffered an ankle injury late on in their Champions League last-16 second-leg loss against Paris Saint-Germain last month.

But the versatile centre-back has now been photographed back out on the grass at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground.

More clarity as to the level of training Chalobah is currently doing should be provided by head coach Liam Rosenior when he speaks at his press conference ahead of Saturday’s Premier League match against Manchester United, which could prove crucial in determining whether the Blues can secure Champions League football for next season.

Last week, Rosenior said: “Trevoh is working really, really hard. He is back on the pitch.”

One-time England international Chalobah has played 41 times for the Blues this season and been a big miss while out with an ankle injury that did not prove as serious as first feared after he was stretchered off in the final minutes of the 3-0 defeat by PSG on March 17.

His return to action earlier than anticipated would be a significant boost for a team in desperate need of turning their woeful form around, after five defeats from their last six games across all competitions.

Captain Reece James, Jamie Gittens and Filip Jorgensen all all currently sidelined for Chelsea through injury, while Levi Colwill continues to build up his fitness having missed the entire season to date following an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered during the summer.
