Aldi has been crowned the cheapest supermarket for the month of March when it comes to a list of the essential items for a weekly shop.
Edinburgh Live conducted our own research, where we searched the online grocery stores of five different supermarkets for 11 items most people would have in their weekly basket.
And our research concluded that Aldi was crowned the cheapest supermarket for 11 essential items, coming £14.28 for the whole basket. Sainsbury's was closest in second place, with their basket price at £15.29.

We searched Aldi, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Asda for the following items:
- Milk
- Bread
- Butter
- Baked Beans
- Soup
- Chicken
- Cereal
- Eggs
- Apples
- Tea Bags
- Orange Juice
Tesco came in third with £15.54, with Asda second-last with a close call of £15.68. Morrisons was dead last with a pricy £16.47 for 11 items. Lidl was not included on this list due to the fact that they do not list any prices online.
Which? also had Aldi as the cheapest supermarket for last month, where they checked the price of 43 popular grocery items every day in February at some of the UK's biggest supermarkets to see how they compare.
Aldi’s basket was the cheapest overall in February 2023, with our shop costing £74.81, on average, beating rival discounter Lidl by £2.69.
The same shop at Waitrose was £96.59, on average, making it £21.78 pricier than Aldi.
Of the 'big four' supermarkets, Sainsbury's was the cheapest at £85.25. There was just seven pence difference between Sainsbury's and Tesco (£85.32) and Asda wasn't far behind either (£85.81).
