Charity football challenge to begin in Dumfries to raise money in memory of Dalbeattie Star stalwarts

A special 24-hour football challenge will get under way in Dumfries on Friday to raise money for charity.

Former Dalbeattie Star players will play a series of seven-a-side games to raise funds for Marie Curie and the British Heart Foundation in memory of club stalwarts Gary Holden, Jimmy Hanny and Frankie Styles who passed away between October, 2020, and March, 2021. Ali Cathro, Darren Kerr, Curtiss Wilson, Paul Cook, Grant Parker, Lewis Sloan and former Star boss Ritchie Maxwell will start their Star 24/7s challenge at 6pm on Friday night at North West Community Campus in Dumfries.

At 10pm they’ll switch to Palmerston Arena before heading to Dalbeattie at 10am on Sunday, where they’ll play at Islecroft Stadium until 6pm.

Everyone is encouraged to cheer the team on at a special family fun day.

Frankie Styles – known as Mr Dalbeattie Star – died in October, 2020.

He had been involved with the club for 35 years having helped with its reformation in 1975 and served as chairman, groundsman and kitman.

Gary Holden, 51, was assistant manager when he passed away on Christmas Day, 2020. He had also held a number of roles at Threave Rovers.

Jimmy Hannay, who had played and coached with Star, died in March 2021 at the age of 43. He was a PE teacher at North West Community Campus.

Money raised from this weekend’s challenge will go mainly to the two charities with a small percentage going to Star’s youth team.
