Chargesheet filed in VK Sasikala case, PIL disposed of

BENGALURU: The Anti-Corruption Bureau on Wednesday informed the high court that a chargesheet was filed before the jurisdictional court on January 7, 2022 in the case pertaining to alleged illegalities, including preferential treatment to AIADMK leader VK Sasikala at Central Prison (Parappana Agrahara).

While then chief superintendent Krishna Kumar and then superintendent Dr R Anitha, have been arraigned as accused no. 1 and 2 , Sasikala is accused no. 5 and her co-prisoner Ilavarasi accused no. 6.

Earlier, the government advocate submitted a memo stating that sanction for prosecution of accused no. 1 and 2 was granted on December 30, 2021, under Prevention of Corruption Act. The allegation against Krishna Kumar is that without there being a life threat or any such alert from any agency, he put Anitha in charge of Sasikala’s security, provided her a secluded place inside the jail in the guise of security, allowed more time to her to talk to visitors and permitted her to cook inside her cell.

A division bench said no further orders are required to be passed in the PIL by KS Gita, a Chennai-based educationist.

Sasikala was convicted in the multi-crore disproportionate assets case and served a four-year term at Central Prison. Gita had claimed that though the report submitted by retired IAS officer Vinay Kumar indicated preferential treatment to Sasikala, ACB hadn’t completed probe even after three years. Though the PIL was disposed of on June 11, 2021 and ACB was granted two months to file the chargesheet, it had sought further time.
