The Chargers picked up a massive victory on Sunday to kickstart the post-bye part of their schedule. The victory over the Broncos improved their record to 3-2.
The win also came on the road in Denver, which could have huge playoff implications later this season. From the start, the Chargers took control of this game.
One glaring takeaway from the game: Justin Herbert is still good at football. It’s something that the players and coaches took note of on Sunday.
“I thought he was about as precise as he could be, or a quarterback could be,” Jim Harbaugh said after the win. “There were some great throws, some great avoid of pressure and just putting the ball in the appropriate spot throughout the entire game, [I] was super impressed. Hopefully this reminds everybody that Justin Herbert is really good at playing quarterback.”
Herbert threw for 237 yards and a touchdown in Week 6, his highest total of the season thus far. In fact, he had thrown for more than 180 yards in a game yet this season until Week 6.
He did so with his top two wideouts, Quentin Johnston and Ladd McConkey, banged up as well. His teammates were thoroughly impressed by Herbert’s play as well, most notably offensive tackle Rashawn Slater.
“I love it when he throws the ball. We love protecting for him. I’m happy for him to get the opportunity,” Slater said.
Herbert’s stats in 2024 won’t exactly tell you how good of a quarterback he still is. He’s played through multiple injuries and doesn’t have as talented of a receiving core anymore, either.
The 2021 Pro Bowler looked much healthier in Week 6, and he did acknowledge how much the bye helped in the healing process of his ankle.
Hopefully, it’s a sign of things to come for the rest of the season, and Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman should only continue to open up the playbook now.
