Chargers place QB Justin Herbert on injured reserve ahead of matchup with Raiders

It’s a short week or the Raiders. They host the Chargers on Thursday night in Las Vegas. And the Chargers will be without starting quarterback Justin Herbert.

The team announced Tuesday that Herbert is having surgery done on his broken finger and has been placed on injured reserve. With just four games left in the season, and the Chargers a long shot for the postseason, Herbert season is likely done at this point.

Raiders interim head coach Antonio Pierce said Monday that the preparation for the Chargers started last Friday. But at that time, Herbert was still slated to command the Chargers’ offense, so that means the Raiders’ coaching staff will have three days and two practices to switch things up and attempt to prepare for what the Chargers intend to do with a new quarterback behind center.

It will be Easton Stick who will start at quarterback for the Chargers.

Stick was the Chargers’ 5th round pick in the 2019 draft out of North Dakota State. And prior to coming in to replace Herbert on Sunday, he had just one career attempt for four yards.

He would complete 13 of 24 passes Sunday for 179 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Not a lot for the Raiders coaching staff to get a bead on him.

Other than the lack of tape, there are no upsides to Stick taking the field instead of Herbert who led the Chargers to a 24-17 win over the Raiders Week four.
