Chanty Beluga takes social media by storm: The bizarre character and viral obsession for her videos

A woman walks into a restaurant, orders food, gets into an Uber or arrives at a pool party. The interaction itself is ordinary. Then she introduces herself.

“Chanty Beluga.”

That unusual name has become the centrepiece of a viral TikTok character, with clips of the cheerful, blonde woman appearing across social media and prompting viewers to repeatedly come back for more.

But Chanty Beluga is not a real person. She is the alter ego of Los Angeles-based comedian and actor Courtney O’Donnell, who has turned the fictional character into one of TikTok’s latest viral sensations.

Chanty Beluga is everywhere

O’Donnell’s Chanty videos are deliberately simple. Dressed in a cheerful, understated style, the character finds herself in everyday situations where she casually introduces herself or makes sure her distinctive name is heard.

Whether she is checking into a restaurant, ordering takeout, visiting a coffee shop or introducing herself at a party, the joke revolves largely around one thing: her name.

The simplicity has made Chanty surprisingly addictive, with fans creating their own accounts dedicated to the character and building an expanding mythology around her.

“This is so dumb and I see myself becoming rapidly obsessed with it,” one follower commented on a TikTok video of Chanty at a coffee shop. “No notes. Just a woman named Chanty Beluga in situations where she makes her name known.”

“Classic Chanty,” another follower wrote.

“I would die for Chanty Beluga,” another commented.

How Courtney O’Donnell created Chanty Beluga

O’Donnell maintains another TikTok account under her real name, where she posts comedy sketches featuring different characters. Her work includes personas such as the host of the fictional “Yup, She Went There” podcast and a divorcée singing her way through heartbreak.

Chanty Beluga, however, quickly stood apart.

O’Donnell posted the first Chanty video on July 28, introducing the character to viewers. The clip quickly took off, collecting nearly 500,000 views.

The name itself came to O’Donnell during the filming of the upcoming comedy “Stephanie, Bride to Be” in Brooklyn, New York.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, she said she and the cast were “being silly” when the name suddenly came to her.

“And I said, ‘Hi, my name’s Chanty,’ and we thought that was funny,” she said. “I was like, ‘Actually, my name is Chanty Beluga.’ We said the full name, and it seriously went viral in the room. We just could not stop saying Chanty Beluga.”

The internet is writing Chanty’s story

One reason the character has caught on is that O’Donnell has intentionally left much of Chanty’s personality undefined.

The videos are short, leaving viewers plenty of room to imagine who she is and what her life might look like beyond each clip.

“Chanty doesn’t play abt her takeout,” one follower wrote in response to a video of Chanty ordering food.

Rather than giving the character an elaborate backstory herself, O’Donnell has allowed her audience to create one.

“She’s a Barbie doll. She’s a paper doll. You can put her in any situation. She can do anything,” O’Donnell told Rolling Stone. “I had this instinct to really build her up and create this crazy backstory, but I thought it was more interesting to allow the internet to create its own.”

The approach appears to be working. Chanty has already crossed over from TikTok into other corners of the internet.

Even MLB has joined the Chanty Beluga trend

Major League Baseball became one of the latest accounts to play along with the phenomenon.

On August 18, the MLB account on X posted that a woman named “Chanty Beluga” was presenting that day’s baseball schedule.

For O’Donnell, the unexpected attention is part of what makes the trend enjoyable.

“Sometimes you go viral for something that you didn’t connect to, and I actually think this is really fun,” O’Donnell told USA Today. “I love pretending to be this woman on the internet who’s sort of quirky and basic and talking to people in the comments like I’m her.”

Why is Chanty Beluga so addictive?

There may not be a complicated answer.

The name simply sounds funny.

“Something about the intonation of the words that feels like crack to say,” O’Donnell told Rolling Stone.

That seemingly meaningless combination of words has become the entire hook. There is no elaborate plot to follow, no complicated character arc and no major punchline. There is simply Chanty Beluga going about her everyday life and making sure everyone knows her name.

Can Chanty Beluga become the next big internet meme?

The obvious comparison now is with other viral internet catchphrases and characters that have taken over social media before eventually fading away.

O’Donnell herself knows the trend may not last forever.

“I like the idea that she is the 6-7 for the girls and the gays,” O’Donnell told USA Today. “That would be really amazing. I don’t know. We’ll have to see. I’d be very happy. These things have a short shelf life, so I’m happy to just kind of be a part of it for now and let people have their fun. If we see some Halloween costumes, I won’t be mad.”
