Channel 4 shares Derry Girls mural change ahead of third season release date

Channel 4 have temporarily updated the iconic Derry Girls mural in Northern Ireland ahead of the third and final season of the hit sitcom.

Posting on Twitter, the television broadcasters wrote: "The #DerryGirls mural has had a temporary update! Series 3 lands on your screens Tuesday 12th at 9.15pm @uvartscic"

In the updated mural, sarcastic Derry Girl member Michelle Mallon (Jamie-Lee O'Donnell) is holding up three fingers instead of two, to commemorate the third season of the Channel 4 show being released.

In the previous mural, Michelle is holding up a peace sign, her go-to pose during the show and as her character - ironic as she is anything but a peaceful person to be around.

Fans replied to Channel 4's tweet with excitement on the new season only being days away from release, after a long three-year hiatus from the cast.

One Twitter user wrote: "Looking forward to the new series!"

Another said: ""Catch yourself on" I'm gonna miss this show."

And a third declared their love for one character: "Sister Michael is the funniest character."

Earlier this week, Glasgow Live reported that one eagle-eyed Derry Girls fan had spotted a message of support to the LGBTQ+ community in the second season of the show.

In episode six of the first season, Clare (Nicola Coughlan) comes out to Erin (Soarise-Monica Jackson), confiding that she is the "wee lesbian" who wrote the story posted in their school newspaper.

After initial backlash, the Derry Girls gang support and love Clare for her honesty in coming out.

One Derry Girls viewer spotted something extremely sentimental about the change in the character's outfits in season two.

Writing on Twitter, the fan wrote: "the derry girls all wearing rainbow badges since clare came out."

In four separate stills from the show, little rainbow pin badges can be spotted on the blazers, ties and denim jackets of the gang, all showing their support for 'wee lesbian' Clare.

Derry Girls season three will air on Channel 4 at 9:15pm on Tuesday, April 12.
