Channel 4 Derry Girls eagle-eyed viewer spots new 'sweet' detail on jackets

Channel 4's Derry Girls has been the show on everyone's lips, as the third and final season of the hit sitcom is coming out in less than a week.

The show that follows the antics of the high-school group dubbed the 'Derry Girls', has dealt with a lot of sensitive yet important topics - including The Troubles, sexuality and coming to terms with the loss of loved ones.

One storyline that stood out in the first season of the show was Clare Devlin's (Nicola Coughlan) coming out story in the mid-90's Northern Ireland society.

In episode six of the first season, Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson) finds an anonymous entry by a lesbian pupil in the school's Searching for Myself writing contest.

Ignoring Clare's objections, Erin decides to publish the story, printing it under the headline "The Secret Life of a Lesbian!"

Clare comes out to Erin, confiding that she is the "wee lesbian" who wrote the story, but is hurt by Erin's negative reaction and stops speaking to her.

It is a very real and transparent showing of how coming out can be for some and showcases how even the most open-minded and kind people can react to news like sexuality and gender in negative ways.

In the end, the group accept Clare for who she is, and they end up dancing to 'Like a Prayer' on stage at their school, while at home parents Mary, Gerry, Sarah, and Joe watch sombrely at home as news reports of a fatal bombing filter through.

One Derry Girls viewer spotted something extremely sentimental about the change in the character's outfits in season two.

Writing on Twitter, the fan wrote: "the derry girls all wearing rainbow badges since clare came out."

In four separate stills from the show, little rainbow pin badges can be spotted on the blazers, ties and denim jackets of the gang, all showing their support for 'wee lesbian' Clare.

It is a truly stand-out moment for the series, but hasn't gone as noticed as other moments in the Channel 4 show have done in the past.

One Twitter user replied to this, saying: "Holy s***, i have the same badge lol...but that's so sweet, there isn't gonna be another show like derry girls after this. i'm gonna miss it when it's over."

The original tweet author then said: "I honestly wept when I noticed, I know I don’t want it to end. I’m so sad s3 is the final season."

Derry Girls season three will air on Channel 4 at 9:15pm on Tuesday, April 12.
