Channel 4 24 Hours in A&E Viewers shocked by 'mangled leg' after young dad involved in head-on crash

Viewers were shocked after witnessing a man's gruesome ankle injury on the latest episode of 24 Hours in A&E, filmed in Nottingham. Episode three, which aired on Channel 4 on Tuesday night (January 17) at 9pm, focused some of its attention on Tom, aged 30, who was in resus following a road crash which resulted in a seriously damaged ankle.

Tom was a passenger in a car when the driver went round a bend at around 40mph and lost control of the vehicle. The car ended up on the other side of the road during a head-on collision.

Tom suffered an open fracture but doctors were also worried about the possibility of infection. At one point during the Channel 4 show, doctors discussed the possibility of amputation below the knee.

Fortunately, after undergoing two bouts of surgery to fix his ankle, Tom had almost made a full recovery. He was later seen on crutches playing in a park with his son.

Viewers took to Twitter, with some reacting with horror as they saw how bad his initial injury was. @buntyhoven wrote: "Another ankle injury on 24 Hours in A&E... no thank you."

@tnekmail wrote: "Just turned 24 Hours in A&E on and within five minutes I was shouting 'Jesus Christ' at the TV because of someone's mangled leg." Someone else said: "In disbelief at the state of that ankle on 24 Hours in A&E and I watched it a few hours ago."

The episode, entitled 'Keep the Faith', also focused heavily on 18-year-old Kye Wilson, who was rushed to Queen's Medical Centre following a cardiac arrest. The first episode featured a 45-year-old mum, who was taken to A&E after falling from an inflatable while on a fun run. Shots of her severely dislocated ankle, where her foot was barely hanging on, made viewers feel queasy.
