I don’t think anyone today thinks the Chancellor has an easy job. Balancing the books for UK PLC is a responsibility like no other and the holder of this great office of state has an unenviable task – it is just not possible to deliver polices that please everybody.
Let’s go back to the Budget on 30 October 2024, which was immensely damaging for the hospitality sector and to the country as a whole. Just as a reminder, the Chancellor slipped in material changes to employers’ national insurance contributions which disproportionately pushed up the costs of employing hourly paid staff – having a further disproportionate impact on companies employing large numbers of workers.
