Celtic v Kilmarnock: Derek McInnes says his side are going to Hampden to 'have a go'

Derek McInnes insists his side are going to Hampden to “have a go” at Celtic.

Kilmarnock have already brushed off their 2-0 defeat to Ange Postecoglou’s side at the weekend – and have switched their full focus to a new game in the Viaplay League Cup semi-final on Saturday.

It will be the Ayrshire club’s first visit to Hampden in 11 years – when they famously won this trophy by beating Celtic 1-0.

And McInnes, left, who won this cup with Aberdeen, has no doubts about the task his side face. But he reckons his players have what it takes to secure a famous victory.

Ahead of the trip to Scotland’s national stadium, McInnes said: “We are going to enjoy this week, I want the players to not only feel the credit of getting to a semi-final, I want them to see it as a chance, as a shot at glory.

“There have been bigger shocks in football than Kilmarnock beating Celtic, but for us to do that we have to take the best bits from the game at Parkhead, and use it as a reminder of what we need to do better.”

He added: “It would be a huge result for us, when you look at the context of it.

“We have a lot of players who came up from the Championship, some boys who experienced the likes of Celtic Park for the first time and haven’t played at Hampden before.

“When you factor all of that in you can see why Celtic are favourites, but we’ve got bundles of spirit, togetherness and we’ve got good experience.

“We are going to Hampden to have a go. Everyone else will be watching it, and I’d rather be in amongst it having a chance than sitting watching someone else playing Celtic on the TV.

“I want my players to try and relish what’s there for them, you just never know, upsets have happened before.”
