Celtic hero Izaguirre lands sporting director role after almost taking shock route out of football

Emilio Izaguirre has been named sporting director at his boyhood club Motagua - but the Celtic hero admits he almost turned to becoming a pastor after football.

The Honduran is a hero at Parkhead after making 271 appearances in green and white, winning countless trophies under Neil Lennon, Ronny Deila and Brendan Rodgers' reigns. He hung up his boots a few months ago and has now moved into a behind the scenes role, but admits this was almost not the case.

Turning to God was on the agenda earlier this year but the Celtic favourite insists it's all because he wants to be remembered as a good human being. He told the Daily Record: "I am very excited and happy with this new challenge at a club that I love. We are going to work very hard to continue giving the supporters a lot of joy."

He said of his religious pursuit: "Being a pastor is a complex term because it can be misinterpreted. I want to help young people and I want to be a disciple of God

"When I was younger, I lost many friends due to violence in Honduras. You have to realise that life is short and you have to take advantage of it.

"I pray morning, afternoon and night. I thank God for everything - without him I am nothing. I have never had any desire to drink or go to nightclubs. God guided me away from that.

"I don't want to be known as someone who had a great game. I want to be known as someone who is a great person."
