Celtic goalkeeper admits costly Denmark Nations League error against Spain

Kasper Schmeichel has held his hands up after a goalkeeping error led to Denmark losing their latest UEFA Nations League match.

Schmeichel, 37, was at fault for Spain's winner that saw Denmark drop to second in Group A4 on Saturday night.

The 1-0 home victory was secured on 79 minutes when Martin Zubimendi picked up the ball at the edge of the box following a loose defensive clearance and found the back of the net with a low effort.

The Real Sociedad midfielder's strike bounced multiple times on route to Schmeichel's net, and it's fair to say that the Celtic goalkeeper could've done better.

It was a mixed night for the experienced shot-shopper because he also made five saves during the clash at Estadio Enrique Roca de Murcia.

That was the most the former Leicester City hero had made in an international game since facing France in the Nations League on September 25, 2022, where he denied seven goalscoring attempts.

Reflecting on his performance to the Danish media after the recent showdown, Schmeichel said: “It’s one of those situations as a keeper. I didn’t see the ball to begin with. It hit Pierre and then I actually had to bet a little bit.

“It went to my left, and I didn’t manage to read the screw on the ball. And then I got a little too far over it. That’s life as a goalkeeper. That something like this can happen.

“Every time a goal is scored, I will always look back and see that there is something I could do better. If you’ve been in there, you know what it’s like. It doesn’t always look good on TV.

“Now I haven’t seen it yet, but it’s one of those situations where I’ll have to gamble a bit because it took that alignment and because I didn’t manage to read the screw.”
