Celtic and Rangers handed derby boost as US squad announced for upcoming internationals

James Sands and Cameron Carter-Vickers will both be available for Celtic vs Rangers next month after being left out of the U.S squad for their upcoming qualifiers.

The USMNT face crucial ties against El Salvador, Canada and Honduras as they look to seal their place at World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

After the Premiership winter break was moved though those matches overlap with domestic games, and under FIFA rules international football takes precedence.

That left Ange Postecoglou facing the nightmare scenario of being without stalwart Carter-Vickers, with Celtic already sweating over the availability of Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi and Daizen Maeda, as well as the injured Kyogo Furuhashi.

Rangers may be without Joe Aribo due to the Africa Cup of Nations while Alfredo Morelos has been called up by Colombia.

They're also waiting to see if Kemar Roofe is required by Jamaica and could also have been without new signing James Sands too.

But both clubs can breathe a sigh of relief after Gregg Berhalter named his squad for the games and did not include either of the defenders.

The USMNT have called a number of players based in Europe for the qualifiers, including Christian Pulisic of Chelsea and Juventus' Weston McKennie.

They currently sit second in their section, one point behind Canada and a point ahead of Mexico.
