Style icons: the chairs in situ
(Picture: Ryan & Robert)One of London’s most famous restaurants, sketch, is presently auctioning off the very furniture that helped made it so popular in the first place.
The Mayfair icon revealed earlier this year that after eight years its pink room — a hit with celebrities and influencers alike — had been rennovated, given a makeover by India Mahdavi (who, it should be said, did the pink scheme too). Officially known as the Gallery, the space is now a rich dusky yellow, and both the David Shrigley artwork that lined the walls and the pink chairs that filled it have gone.
While the Shrigley’s are thought to be back with the artist, replaced by pieces from Yinka Shonibare, earlier this week the chairs appeared on auction site 1stDibs, and can be seen here.
While a number of bids appear to now be closed, there are still some 14 chairs up for grabs until bidding closes in four days time. Prices started at £100 and vary, but most appear to be sitting somewhere around the £500-£600 mark, with the others having sold for circa £1000.
The chairs, which intentionally look a little like sponge fingers around a cake, were upholstered in rose-coloured velvet and leather by Pierre Frey. Despite being well used — the Gallery’s pink incarnation lasted for eight years, and the restaurant was always packed — most appear to be in good condition.
