Police have issued a CCTV appeal after an elderly man was injured in a shocking attack at a Metro station.

It was reported that a man in his 60s was assaulted on the platform of Hebburn Metro Station at about 11.20pm on January 25.

The victim had travelled from Newcastle Central Station to Hebburn. During the journey he became aware of another man in the same carriage.

After leaving the train at Hebburn, the victim realised he had been followed by the man – who punched him in the face and ribs, before jumping back on the Metro.

The victim suffered a black eye and rib injuries as a result of the attack. Police launched an investigation into the assault with inquiries ongoing.

Officers have now identified a man who they would like to speak to in relation to the incident. He was in the station at the time and could have information that can assist police enquiries.

The man, or anyone who recognises him, is asked to contact police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of the Northumbria Police website or by calling 101 quoting crime number 010407L/22.
