Saturday’s Iron Bowl between Alabama and Auburn is the final time the two teams will meet in a game covered by CBS.
With the SEC television contract heading to ESPN beginning in 2024, CBS Sports’s Brad Nessler and Gary Danielson made sure to make their presence felt after the officials blew an early call in Saturday’s matchup.
Trailing 7–0, Auburn received a kickoff, and return man Brian Battie’s facemask was clearly grabbed by a Crimson Tide player. Flags came raining down, and it appeared as if the penalty would be a facemask against Alabama. Instead, an illegal block in the back was called on Auburn, and there was no penalty call for the facemask.
Nessler and Danielson couldn’t believe it.
“Wait a second. It’s gotta be on both sides,” Danielson said with confusion as he looked for offsetting penalties. “They can’t miss that, can they?”
Added Nessler, “This is as blatant as you’re ever gonna get. … That’s the worst non-call I’ve seen this year.”
After another replay was shown of the facemask, Danielson doubled down.
“You’d have to not understand football not to see this.”
Here is the clip in its entirety. Decide for yourself.
