Castle Douglas Accordion and Fiddle Club members pay tribute to Ian Riddet

Members of Castle Douglas Accordion and Fiddle Club have paid tribute to Ian Riddet.

Ian, who died in January, was well known in accordion and fiddle circles, particularly in Castle Douglas, Dumfries, the Border Strathspey and Reel Society and the Gallovidians.

His cheerful smile and friendly greeting will be greatly missed.

Club compere Gerald Bell asked Bob Watson from Torthorwald to start the proceedings at the meeting with marches, a slow air and some classical waltzes.

Bob was followed by George Shanks on his moothie and he played some favourite tunes in tribute to Ian.

He was followed by John Cowan from Kirkcudbright who played the variations on The Bonnie Lass of Bon Accord with charm and expert touch.

Next to perform was Eddie McMeeken from Thornhill with a fine accordion selection and then the audience was treated to a splendid debut performance by Marion Donnelly, who hails from Kippford.

John Weaks came all the way from Glasgow to play his three-row button box and his performance was well received.

The guest artistes for the evening were the Charlie Kirkpatrick Trio, consisting of Charlie himself on button accordion, James Clark on piano and Ian Graham on drums.

Charlie is a very experienced performer and will be featured shortly on Take the Floor and the trio’s performance was up to the usual high standards.

After tea and biscuits Barbara Fisher from Dumfries gave her usual polished performance with backing from second box, drums and piano and members also heard from John Waugh who had come from Carlisle to play his accordion, whilst Bill Porter lent his expertise on the drums.

They were followed by a second round of music and chat from Charlie Kirkpatrick and his Trio to round off another special evening at Castle Douglas.
