Carolina Panthers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars game recap: Everything we know

Well, it turns out that Sunday’s game at EverBank Stadium really was between the Washington Generals and the Harlem Globetrotters.

Here’s everything we know from the Carolina Panthers’ New Year’s Eve loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars:

Final score: Jaguars 26, Panthers 0

Keys to the game

Bob Self/Florida Times-Union
  • After a career outing on Christmas Eve, Young was stifled in Duval County. He completed 19 of his 32 throws for 112 yards and an interception, leading an offensive output of just 124 total yards.
  • Young’s terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day was highlighted (or lowlighted, if that’s a thing) by six sacks. Jacksonville’s standout pass rusher Josh Allen continued his sparkling campaign, leading the way with three takedowns of the rookie.
  • The Panthers defense, per usual, had trouble stopping the run. Jaguars running back Travis Etienne rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.

It was over when . . .

Well, it never really got started for the Panthers. (That tends to happen when you don’t score any points.) But if we had to put a fork in this one, we’ll plant it five minutes into the fourth quarter.

Down 19-0, Young was able to get his offense to Jacksonville’s 32-yard line. But, in what may have been a nod to tonight’s proceedings in Times Square, wide receiver DJ Chark dropped three balls over four plays to cause a turnover a downs.

  • OLB Brian Burns: eight tackles (two for a loss), 1.0 sack, two quarterback hits
  • DT Derrick Brown: eight tackles, one pass defensed, one ejection
  • LB Deion Jones: seven tackles, 1.0 sack

What's next?

Since the game was ugly, here’s an awesome picture from the corgi race at halftime.

Anyway, the Panthers’ brutal 2023 campaign will finally come to an end next week, when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
