- Carlsberg Britvic has announced plans to close the historic Marston’s Brewery in Burton-upon-Trent by summer 2027, putting around 310 jobs at risk.
- The closure will end nearly two centuries of brewing history at the Staffordshire site, which was founded by John Marston in 1834.
- Carlsberg attributed the decision to a steep decline in UK cask ale demand, noting that market volumes have more than halved in under a decade.
- While major brands like Hobgoblin, McEwan’s and Brooklyn will continue production elsewhere, smaller regional cask ale brands are set to be sold.
- Chief executive Paul Davies confirmed the site and logistics operations will continue to run during a consultation and transition period.
