Carl Frampton backs 'old mate' to be big hit in coaching role

Carl Frampton has predicted a big future for "old mate" Conrad Cummings after the Coalisland ex-boxer announced he has entered the world of professional coaching.

Former two-time European champion Cummings earned his licence earlier this month and is hoping to guide the careers of up and coming talent in Ireland.

The 32-year-old has been working out of Ian Mahood's gym in Carrickfergus, the home of Belfast's IBO World super-featherweight champion Anto Cacace.

Frampton and Cummings used to be part of the same stable during their own pro careers, with the latter announcing his retirement two years ago.

Former two-weight world champ Frampton believes the Co Tyrone man has the experience and knowledge to be a big hit in coaching.

"I was happy to see my old mate Conrad Cummings has got his trainer's licence as this will be a very good move," Frampton told the Sunday Life.

"He will have been disappointed that his career in the ring didn't work out as he had so much ability - you only have to look at how he performed in the World Series of Boxing, where he beat Olympic silver medallists over five rounds in a professional format, to see that.

"There were reasons for that and I don't think it was all down to himself, but this next chapter is good for him as I think he will make a great addition to any coaching team."

Frampton added: "He's in Carrick working alongside Iain Mahood and at some stage I expect he will end up as a head coach..

"Conrad knows the game well. When he trained he always put so much into every session and will be able to pass on advice and knowledge to young guys coming through.

"He will absolutely get a fighter fit, but you need so much more than that and the knowledge he has will be invaluable."
