Cardiff City transfer news as Derby County remain in striker hunt and Tomlin training with new club again

Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Monday, July 11.

Derby still pursuing Collins after friendly goal

Derby County are still in pursuit of Cardiff City striker James Collins, who scored in the 3-2 friendly win over Cambridge United.

It was unknown whether Collins would be involved in the clash, given the rife speculation surrounding his future and the links with the Rams and Portsmouth. But he was selected to start up front and actually netted the first goal of the season for City, albeit in a friendly.

And our sister title DerbyshireLive have confirmed that the Rams are still keen on acquiring Collins' services. Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley revealed that Cardiff had told him the 31-year-old would be available this summer if the right suitor came along. Derby are hopeful they are that suitor, it seems.

Tomlin training with Doncaster

Former Cardiff City playmaker Lee Tomlin is currently a free agent and training with League Two side Doncaster Rovers.

Tomlin, who was the club's Player of the Season for the 2019/20 campaign, saw his contract terminated by mutual consent at the beginning of last season, having struggled to hit the heights after a year-long lay-off with injury.

A short-term contract with Walsall, who are managed by former Newport County boss Mike Flynn, didn't yield the results either party had hoped for, with Tomlin playing only five times for the club.

And the 33-year-old is now a free agent and training with Doncaster. WalesOnline understands Tomlin is still weighing up what his next move is and whether retirement might even be the right step for him.

But in the meantime he is training with Donny, who might also be keen on signing him if it works for all concerned.

Ex-Cardiff chief lands French recruitment job

Former Cardiff City head of recruitment Iain Moody has been hired as a transfer consultant by French outfit OGC Nice, according to L'Equipe.

Moody now has his own consultancy company, which he set up after leaving Crystal Palace in 2014 in the wake of discriminatory text exchanges with ex-Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay came to light.

Welshman Sir Dave Brailsford is the sporting director of INEOS, the company which owns Ligue 1 side OGC Nice, and it is thought he was heavily involved in recruiting Moody, having spoken with ex-Palace boss Roy Hodgson and chairman Steve Parish.

L'Equipe report that Moody's remit won't extend to identifying targets, however the French-speaker will be used in transfer negotiations until his deal ends on September 1, when the summer window closes.

Moody worked at Cardiff between July 2011 and October 2013.

U18s announce pre-season fixtures

Cardiff City have announced three pre-season friendlies ahead of their Professional Development League campaign.

The young Bluebirds will take on West Brom, Liverpool and Reading all away from home throughout the course of July and August as they ramp up preparations for their own season.

The fixtures are as follows...

  • West Bromwich Albion U18 vs. Cardiff City U18 - 16/07/2022, 12pm KO.
  • Liverpool U18 vs. Cardiff City U18 - 23/07/2022, 1pm KO.
  • Reading U18 vs. Cardiff City U18 - 06/08/2022, 11am.

Flop's failed move to Pompey

Former Cardiff City striker Oumar Niasse's trial with League One side Portsmouth has been cancelled, according to the Portsmouth News.

Niasse's time with the Bluebirds saw him fail to score in 13 appearances in the second half of their most recent Premier League season. Since then he has spent time with Burton Albion and Huddersfield Town.

He left Burton, also in League One, last season and has reportedly been training with 10th-tier outfit West Didsbury in a bit to maintain some level of fitness.

However, Danny Cowley, who has also been an admirer of James Collins in this window, was prepared to offer him a way back into the game with a trial at Pompey, which was due to begin on Monday.

That has now fallen through, though, and the 32-year-old Senegalese striker is still in search of a new team.
