TRICHY: A man driving a car under the influence of alcohol had rammed two electric poles before coming to a halt on an arterial road near Trichy central bus stand in Cantonment on Sunday evening.
No injuries or casualties were reported as there was no pedestrian or vehicular movement during the mishap.
The driver accused of drunk driving by the city police escaped unhurt as the car had safety airbags. Police said that one S John driving a sedan was approaching the collector office road from the central bus stand via the Railway society marriage hall area on VOC road. While approaching the Bishop house on the road, the driver under the influence of alcohol rammed one electricity pole. Further, he damaged the compound wall of the defence campus and due to the car’s high speed, another electricity pole was rammed and uprooted by the car.
Electricity wires fell on the road, as the road was empty at the time of the accident, eyewitness said that a major accident was averted. Residents sought speed-breakers in the stretch to be painted with road markings and electricity poles to be relocated to road ends.
"The vehicle was confiscated, and the driving license of the accused man will be cancelled through the regional transport office,” a police officer said. Due to the accident, the electricity supply was disrupted in parts of the Cantonment for more than three hours.
