A 59-year-old man was rushed into emergency surgery after a car crash left his spleen torn and bleeding. When surgeons opened his abdomen, they found blood, as expected. They also found pus.
The source was a 12-by-10-centimeter fatty growth on the outer wall of his transverse colon. It was inflamed, partly dead, and harboring an abscess, and with enlarged lymph nodes nearby, it looked like cancer. Laboratory analysis later showed it was a benign lipoma.
