Cape Verde produce another World Cup shock to keep remarkable run alive

Cape Verde's remarkable World Cup journey continued on Sunday as the island nation earned a 2-2 draw against Uruguay, sparking celebrations among supporters in the United States.

Fans gathered in Brockton, Massachusetts, home to one of the largest Cape Verdean communities outside the country, to watch the match and cheer on their team. The atmosphere turned festive after Cape Verde scored its first-ever goals at a World Cup, with celebrations spilling onto the streets after the final whistle.

Kevin Pina netted the nation's first World Cup goal before Helio Varela scored a late equaliser to secure the draw. Supporters waved flags, danced, honked car horns and set off fireworks to mark the historic achievement.

For many fans, simply qualifying for the tournament was already a victory. But after holding both Spain and Uruguay and remaining in contention for a place in the knockout stage, belief is growing that Cape Verde can continue its fairytale run at its first World Cup.
