Cancer screenings like colonoscopies are supposed to be free. Hers cost $2,185

Preventive care should be free to patients under the Affordable Care Act, but Elizabeth Melville of Sunapee, NH., was charged $2,185 for a colonoscopy in 2021. (Philip Keith/KHN)

Elizabeth Melville and her husband are gradually hiking all 48 mountain peaks that top 4,000 feet in New Hampshire.

"I want to do everything I can to stay healthy so that I can be skiing and hiking into my 80s — hopefully even 90s!" said Melville, a 59-year-old part-time ski instructor who lives in the vacation town of Sunapee.
